Immunization Exemptions
Vermont's school immunization regulations apply to any student attending any public or independent kingergarten, elementary or secondary school. Before entry, students must show documentation that they have received the required immunizations unless exempt for medical, religious, or philosophical reasons. Children with an immunization exemption may be kept out of school during a disease outbreak. The length of time out of school will vary depending upon the disease and circumstances of the outbreak.
Medical Exemption:
"A medical exemption may be utilized only when vaccines are medically contraindicated. It should not be used
- when a vaccine is not needed due to immunity such as a history of chickenpox disease (see below)
- to circumvent vaccine recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) such as the
minimum age, and or interval between vaccine doses." Vermont Department of Health
In order to receive a medical exemption, The VT department of Health form, "Medical Immunization Exemption - Child Care and Schools"needs to be completed, signed by a medical provider and submitted to the school. This form is available from the school nurse or by clicking here-->
Philosophical and Religious Immunization Exemptions:
In order for a child to receive a philosophical or religious immunization exemption, every year their parents/guardians must complete and sign the VT department of Health form "Annual Philosophical and Religious Immunization Exemptions - Child Care and Schools." It includes a section where the parent acknowledges they have reviewed and understand "Required Parent Education Information" developed by the Vermont Department of Health. Varicella / Chickenpox Disease:
Before school entry, students must have 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine. However, a student who has had chickenpox disease can still enroll, provided that the VT Department of Health form "Documentaion for Varicella (Chickenpox) Disease" has been completed and signed by the parent /guardian documenting that the child has had Chickenpox.
